Jason Marquis threw arguably his best outing of the 2008 season, under the lights on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Marquis went 6.1 innings, only allowing 3 hits, 1 run, unearned, walking just 1 and striking out 2, in a 3-1 win over the Dodgers, to split the four game set. Our guy Alfonso Soriano went 1-5, to push his season average to .279, while striking out once.

The Cubs take Monday off, and will host the Braves for three starting with facing Tom Glavine Tuesday night, before heading to Toronto for a 3 game series with the BlueJays over the weekend!

On Tuesday, May 11, the Atlanta Braves will come tearing into Chicago. for a 3 game stand against the Cubs. From the standpoint of statistics, the Cubs have a hugely profound advantage in this Wrigley series. The Cubs have been nearly unbeatable at Wrigley Field; they hold a 15-2 home record as of May 9th with a team ERA of 2.98. The Braves have posted a meager road record and face the possibility of having Chipper Jones sit out for part or all of the series. Chipper Jones reported a slight tear in his right quadriceps Sunday and is hoping to be back at least at the beginning of the next series.

Alfonso Soriano, hot-hitting as ever at Wrigley Field, has hit .367 with 14 homers and 31 RBIs and an .825 slugging percentage in 28 games against the Braves since 2005, including a pair of three-homer games and a two-homer game.

Good luck to the Cubs and hopes for a great series!

Pitching Matchups

Tuesday:

LHP Tom Glavine (2-2, 4.47 ERA) vs. LHP Ted Lilly (5-5, 5.23 ERA)

Wednesday:

RHP Jair Jurrjins (6-3, 3.77 ERA) vs. RHP Ryan Dempster (7-2, 2.90 ERA)

Thursday

RHP Tim Hudson (7-4, 2.86 ERA) vs RHP Sean Gallagher (3-2, 4.42 ERA)

With the Chicago Cubs through 61 games, with the baseball’s best record, the Chicago Cubs are enjoying the 2008 season. The Cubs sit at 39-22, for a .639 clip, which places them 3.5 games up on the St. Louis Cardinals, 6 on the Brewers, and 7.5 from the Astros. The Cardinals are tied with the Phillies for the second best record in the NL. In the AL Anaheim and Boston sit two back of the Cubs current clip.
For Alfonso Soriano, the season has been up and down. An awful offensive start, followed by an injury, followed by horrible outfield play, but an explosion of offensive power, now steady performances. Let’s take a look at Alfonso’s stats, as of today and where it ranks in the NL.

Alfonso Soriano will (probably) be making his amazing comeback into baseball on September 1st, when the Cubs face off the Astros in a head to head, dog eat dog face off homestand. Here are Alfonso’s numbers at home, against the Astros, and at home against the Astros.

2007 Season vs. Astros

6 games

5-25, .200 AVG.

4 runs

1 double

0 triples

1 homerun

3 rbis

0 walks

8 strikeouts

Cmon Fonzie! You can do better! Really, no walks, eight strikeouts!?!?!?! Well, at least you got a homerun and a couple hits, but seriously, let’s bring up that batting average!

2007 At Wrigley Field

54 games

48-227, .211 AVG.

31 runs

14 doubles

3 triples

4 homeruns

13 rbis

9 walks

54 strikeouts

There’s those strikeouts again! Obviously this guy’s had some struggles at home. But when Fonzie hits it, he hits it pretty hard, and he’s a GREAT clutch hitter, even though he seems to get more hits away. And the average is a little better but not compared to his real average (.297).

Career vs. Astros

29 games

31-117, .242 AVG.

26 runs

8 doubles

0 triples

7 homeruns

20 rbis

5 walks

22 strikeouts

The 26 runs in 29 games is definately something to be proud of… Good job, Fonzie. The one thing is, again with the strikeouts. Try to bring up the average just a bit

Career at Wrigley

60 games

52-252, .176 AVG.

33 runs

15 doubles

3 triples

5 homeruns

14 rbis

10 walks

63 strikeouts

Overall, Fonzie’s done a pretty good job with hitting against the Astros at Wrigley. He has a HUGE amount of runs and rbis, which means he’s a REALLY good clutch hitter and baserunner. Good luck, Fonzie!
