Soriano/Cubs win Sunday Night Baseball

Jason Marquis threw arguably his best outing of the 2008 season, under the lights on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Marquis went 6.1 innings, only allowing 3 hits, 1 run, unearned, walking just 1 and striking out 2, in a 3-1 win over the Dodgers, to split the four game set. Our guy Alfonso Soriano went 1-5, to push his season average to .279, while striking out once.

The Cubs take Monday off, and will host the Braves for three starting with facing Tom Glavine Tuesday night, before heading to Toronto for a 3 game series with the BlueJays over the weekend!

Cubs-Braves at Wrigley

On Tuesday, May 11, the Atlanta Braves will come tearing into Chicago. for a 3 game stand against the Cubs. From the standpoint of statistics, the Cubs have a hugely profound advantage in this Wrigley series. The Cubs have been nearly unbeatable at Wrigley Field; they hold a 15-2 home record as of May 9th with a team ERA of 2.98. The Braves have posted a meager road record and face the possibility of having Chipper Jones sit out for part or all of the series. Chipper Jones reported a slight tear in his right quadriceps Sunday and is hoping to be back at least at the beginning of the next series.

Alfonso Soriano, hot-hitting as ever at Wrigley Field, has hit .367 with 14 homers and 31 RBIs and an .825 slugging percentage in 28 games against the Braves since 2005, including a pair of three-homer games and a two-homer game.

With the Chicago Cubs through 61 games, with the baseball’s best record, the Chicago Cubs are enjoying the 2008 season. The Cubs sit at 39-22, for a .639 clip, which places them 3.5 games up on the St. Louis Cardinals, 6 on the Brewers, and 7.5 from the Astros. The Cardinals are tied with the Phillies for the second best record in the NL. In the AL Anaheim and Boston sit two back of the Cubs current clip.
For Alfonso Soriano, the season has been up and down. An awful offensive start, followed by an injury, followed by horrible outfield play, but an explosion of offensive power, now steady performances. Let’s take a look at Alfonso’s stats, as of today and where it ranks in the NL.

Soriano/Cubs take on Kuroda/Dodgers

Alfonso Soriano, and the first place Chicago Cubs are set to take on Hiroki Kuroda and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second game of a four game set over the weekend.

In Kuroda’s last start, he went 6.1 innings, giving up 7 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, but took the loss.

In that game, Alfonso Soriano went 2-3 with a strikeout.

Soriano and Cubs take on Suppan and Brewers

On Wednesday, Alfonso Soriano and the 0-1 Chicago Cubs will take on Jeff Suppan and the 1-0 Milwaukee Brewers.

Alfonso has faced Suppan 33 times in his career, coming away with 7 hits, which leads to a .212 batting average. Soriano has two doubles, but has never homered against Suppan. Alfonso has walked one time, and struck out 7 times.

I was reading some Cubs blogs the other day when I ran into this from Bleed Cubbie Blue. They talked a bit about Soriano’s projections for this year. Here is my feedback on that with my own projections:

B: 600 (fewer because of some injury)
R: 101
H: 184
2B: 45 (doubles machine)
3B: 5 (will have some legs this year)
HR: 33 (not as much power)
RBI: 89 (darn leadoff spot)
BB: 40 (can’t take a pitch)
SO: 145
SB: 31 (will run more!)
CS: 5
AVG: .304 (should hit over 300 this year
OBA: .350
SLG: .532

There’s those strikeouts again! Obviously this guy’s had some struggles at home. But when Fonzie hits it, he hits it pretty hard, and he’s a GREAT clutch hitter, even though he seems to get more hits away. And the average is a little better but not compared to his real average (.297).

Overall, Fonzie’s done a pretty good job with hitting against the Astros at Wrigley. He has a HUGE amount of runs and rbis, which means he’s a REALLY good clutch hitter and baserunner. Good luck, Fonzie!

Another very good batting average for Alfonso. His 8 rbi’s in 8 games is pretty impressive, but once again let’s improve upon the walks/strikeouts ratio.
